Earlier in the month we had the great pleasure of exhibiting in the Floral Installations category at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park in Cheshire.
'Nest and Bloom' is a floral installation, that looks to capture the imagination of the public through thoughtful, responsibly sourced, sustainable floral design by Honour Farm Flowers. Our installation was constructed by forming grounded meadow scenes, which flowed and arched to create an immersive display which you can walk around.
The grounded meadow scenes gently create a circular shape, representative of the a regenerative closed loop system. Sitting centrally within the meadow is a large woven nest, hand crafted using traditional willow weaving techniques. Within the nest sit two eggs, made using recycled cardboard/paper which were finished with non-toxic paint. Above the meadow scene, suspended on transparent thread hang two birds created from dried grasses stitched together forming gestural, organic bird like shapes. These contemporary bird forms were made by hand using sustainable techniques, generating organic movement when visitors walk by. The meadow scenes were formed using sustainable techniques engineered specifically for this design.
The concept behind our design is to raise awareness on the importance of protecting our common garden birds by forming a deeper understanding and connection with the public through our carefully designed floral installation. Garden birds play a leading role in the success of our home gardens, green spaces and woodlands through helping maintain a well balanced tropic level.
As regenerative flower growers, we practice permaculture and chemical-free techniques in cultivating high quality British cut flowers from our property in Brontë Country, West Yorkshire. We heavily rely on the health of our local ecosystem in maintaining good crop yields and the vitality of our blooms. Common Blackbirds, House Sparrows, Robins, Great spotted woodpeckers, Goldfinches, Great Tits, (we could list them all) are integral to our success, assisting to manage the non-beneficial insect population which would otherwise demolish our crops. At Honour Farm we also have a small flock of ducks, our slug slayers, who in addition act as our pest management system. By welcoming these feathered friends into our gardens by installing bird boxes, feeders and water sources we are directly benefiting our environment and creating a climate for flowers to thrive. In our experience, if the birds can nest, the flowers will bloom.
Our time exhibiting at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park is one we will cherish for a long time and we’d like to thank the show team for choosing and funding our design to bring it to fruition in the Flower School marquee. It was a remarkable experience being part of such a prestigious and well organised event.
